Mark, a transplant to the South from upstate NY by way of California and Florida, has been at the Peel for nearly 4 years. A graduate of UNC-A and lover of music, dark humor, and obscure film and cultural references, we're happy to feature Mark's personal recommendations for shows not to be missed. Come say howdy the next time you see him at the bar. He'll be the one in bad-ass motorcycle boots, looking like he should be wearing a three-piece suit with a waist coat. |

| The Crystal Method
I was living in Sanford, Florida in the mid nineties. This was before the internet became what it is today. Before file sharing, before downloading, before Pandora and bit torrent. This was a time when you could hear really cool music on college radio. I made mix tapes (Yeah, mix tapes.) from all the great stuff on this station I tuned into at midnight. This is how I was introduced to acid Jazz. Along with that it was Portishead, funki porcini, DJ Cam, DJ Shadow, Lords of acid, 24kt. Black, Tricky and The Crystal Method. To me, these tapes now sound like the energy of youth. I had a friend named Todd who would drive us on these truly epic road trips. He could jam it for 48 hours, turn around and do it all over again. This music was his soundtrack. |

Shooter Jennings & Heirophant
It is late, the bar is packed under the light of hundreds of blinking Christmas lights and beer neon. My sweaty hand reaches behind me as I talk to crank the volume knob up to where it clicks and can't go any more. I have lost some of my hearing because of nights like this. We are all looking for a dirty good time. It is July in Long Beach, California and it is hot. I just had to break up a fight between two sailors and four frat guys from Long Beach State. There is a man in a cowboy hat arguing with a long haired Englishman in a Motorhead t-shirtshirt. Shooter Jennings is in all our ears, "Manifesto #1" . I will never forget these nights; some in attendance won't remember them. Before it is over tonight, I will have poured gallons of beer, one or two on me and the floor. Someone will be crying, someone will be yelling and most of us will be laughing. It will hurt tommorow. Bad. If you've ever been in a bar like this, if you've ever sung along to Hank Williams Jr. with friends, if you can relate to the line in the song "Sunday Morning Coming Down" that says: "I woke up Sunday morning with no way to hold my head that didn't hurt", come see Shooter Jennings. I'll be behind the bar. To buy tickets, click here. |

Yard Dogs Road Show
The Yard Dogs Road Show is coming to town and I am excited. I've been working at the club for over three years now and there are a handful of acts I really hope come back. The Yard Dogs Road Show is on my shortlist. Anyone who tells me he/she does not enjoy a good sword swallower is ...frankly.....the kind of person I just don't trust. When this show rolls into town, I want to help raise the big striped tent and feed the elephants. It also makes me want to dress classier. Don't know why. This show is mezmerizing. I love Nina Simone. I truly, deeply do. The song "Feelin' Good" is sacred to me and I believe it has the baddest, grooviest horn line in music. People try to cover Nina Simone with mixed results. For most, I don't think they try hard enough. You better put all your guts into it if you're gonna bring it.... or go home. Ms. Lily Rose will take the stage as part of this show and if we are all lucky, she will do her version of my favorite Nina Simone song and the rafters will ring. She nails it .......she wails. Zoe Jakes is a belly dancer without peer. Her performance is such that I'm convinced that after she performs, she becomes a whisp of smoke to return to the genie bottle from whence she came. You say "Vaudeville side show anyone?" I say: "Hell yes". Wanna run away and join the circus? To buy tickets, click here. |
